About the Authors
Rudolph Ballentine, MD, is a pioneer of the holistic health movement and graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine. He is the director of the Center for Holistic Medicine, which offers integrative approaches to treatment such as psychotherapy, homeopathy, ayurveda, yoga, meditation, and applied kinesiology. He also served as the president of the Himalayan Institute for 12 years and as the director of its Combined Therapy Department for 18 years. Dr. Ballentine is the author of several books, including Radical Healing and the classic Diet and Nutrition.
Swami Rama, the founder of the Himalayan Institute, was one of the most remarkable figures of the twentieth century. His teachings, publications, and humanitarian efforts have rippled positive changes around the world, and have brought yoga into the lives of countless people. Swami Rama was born in northern India in 1925, and was raised from childhood by the Himalayan sage Bengali Baba. Swami Rama also received higher education in both India and Europe. From 1949 to 1952 he held the prestigious position of Shankaracharya in South India. He then returned to his master to receive further training at his cave monastery. Swami Ajaya, PhD, is a licensed psychotherapist, and a swami of the Sri Vidya tradition. After receiving his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley, Swami Ajaya became a postdoctoral fellow at at the University of Wisconsin, Department of Psychiatry. In 1973 he was initiated as a swami in the Himalayan tradition by Swami Rama. As a swami, he spent years in India studying and teaching yoga and meditation. He has written and edited several landmark texts that integrate Eastern and Western approaches to holistic healing.
