At the Eleventh Hour: The Biography of Swami Rama

At the Eleventh Hour is more than just a biography about the accomplishments of Himalayan master Swami Rama and an overview of the profound system of yogic knowledge he brought to the West. This book tells the story of Swamiji through the eyes of Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, PhD, his devoted student and successor as the spiritual head of the Himalayan Institute. As you read Pandit Tigunait’s account of life with his master, you will gain insight into the guru-disciple relationships Swami Rama had both with his master and with his own students.

    Reviews

I first met Swami Rama in 1970 at the Menninger Institute, when he demonstrated remarkable control of "involuntary" functions, especially heartbeat. I had no idea at the time how complex he was as an individual or how remarkably realized as a spiritual adept and teacher. And even though I was aware of his work in India and America over the years, I still did not have a full sense of his rich life until I read Pandit Rajmani Tigunait's biography of him. This informative and very personal narrative gives a memorable and impressive picture of a modern-day saint, whose legacy is very much alive in both the East and the West.

Pandit Tigunait presents a riveting and enlightening biography of the master he loves and respects, interweaving the story of Swami Rama's life, philosophy and experiences with the wisdom of the masters throughout the ages.
    —Library Journal

For devotees and practitioners of yoga or Eastern meditation, there is much to digest: Swami's place in India, his contribution to hatha yoga, his seemingly miraculous mind-body abilities, and his role as director of the Himalayan Institute in Pennsylvania. Tigunait reveals the contrasts in Swami's approach—he is kind one day and seemingly harsh the next—and shows how they are not so opposed to each other. Tigunait conveys the story with devotion and genuineness, sharing both his surprises and assurances. Recommended for biography collections and for sections covering yoga, spiritual healing, contemporary religious practices, and self-help guides.
