Shadows in Cages: Forgotten Women and Children in India's Prisons

Shadows in Cages takes us on an eye-opening journey of the shocking, inhumane conditions that exist in India's prison system—especially for the innocent children who are incarcerated with their mother, only to be torn away when they reach the age of five, sometimes never to see their mother again. In this soul-stirring, in-depth account, Ruzbeh Nari Bharucha offers firsthand interviews with the women prisoners, their children, social workers, lawyers, and prison authorities, unraveling an amazing tale of transformation and hope in the midst of this dark despair.

This book illustrates that with compassion and generosity, one individual can make a world of difference in the lives of suffering souls who truly need our help. Featuring a special foreword by the Dalai Lama, Shadows in Cages is a deeply moving emotional experience that will touch the heart and inspire the soul.

    From the Introduction

"This book focuses...on the plight of the neglected and often forgotten mothers who find themselves in Indian prisons, many not even convicted, but merely awaiting trial. Whatever they may have done or are accused of doing, these women remain human beings like the rest of us. I hope this book will inspire more individuals to help others in trouble who can no longer easily help themselves."
    – His Holiness the Dalai Lama

    Reviews

"As Inspector General, I observed firsthand how terrible and inhumane it was to have children living with their mothers in prisons that lacked virtually everything that is required for a healthy childhood. This book is an expose that will help stir people to be proactive in piercing the walls of indifference that trap these women and children. Ruzbeh writes from the heart–Shadows in Cages is a labor of love"
    – Dr Kiran Bedi, former Inspector General, Prisons, Tihar Central Jail
